چکیده
This paper presents development of new haptic display capable of stimulating the muscles and tendons of the forearms as well as the tactile receptors in the fingers as a new approach for virtual reality device. Investigation of simultaneous presentation of both tactile and force effects are conducted and presented in this paper. The haptic display consists of a tactile display with a 4-by-12 array of stimulus pins driven by micro-actuators and an articulated manipulator. The display’s handle was constructed replicating a conventional PC mouse so that anyone could comfortably use it without special training or operation knowledge. Vertical movement of the virtual tactile pad in the virtual world is controlled in proportion to the compressive force applied on the display pad. This makes it possible to reduce the operator’s energy consumption during manipulation in 3D-space. Operators can now work in 3D-space in spite of their manipulations actually being done in 2.5D-space. Evaluation experiments were performed using the display, in both force-only mode and combined-mode (force + INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL ON SMART SENSING AND INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS VOL. 6, NO. 3, JUNE 2013

Integration of Electrotactile and Force Displays for Telexistence
Telexistence (or telepresence) enable us to interact with another human or object in a remote or a virtual place through a robotic system (Tachi & Yasuda, 1994). This technology spreads across the world because of a desire to extend a person’s sensing and interacting capability to remote places. In telexistence technologies, a robotic system called haptic display that provides haptic feedback t...
متن کاملTactile Sensation Measurement for the Design of a Vibratory Haptic Display
This paper describes the characteristics of tactile sensation which were measured under vibratory-pin stimulation to find optimal stimulus condition applied to a vibratory haptic display. Six experiments related to sensation scaling, haptic impression, two-point discrimination, adaptation and apparent movement were performed based on a three-pin stimulator which controlled and measured the ampl...
متن کاملTouch Screens and Touch Surfaces are Enriched by Haptic Force-Feedback
Greek word haptikos (from haptesthai, to grasp or touch). For touch user interfaces, the term typically refers to a tactile sensation or force-feedback that users experience when touching the surface. Conventional touch screens do not provide the tactile sensation of mechanical buttons and knobs, resulting in a less satisfying experience. Haptics technology can reproduce the same feel or tactil...
متن کاملEvaluation of Pressure-Slippage-Generating Tactile Mouse using Edge Presentation
Problem statement: Although a conventional tactile display can generate distributed pressure, our tactile mouse can generate not only distributed pressure but also slippage force. In previous works, this tactile mouse was effective on virtual figure presentation tests. Advanced tests are required to evaluate this tactile display. Approach: To compare virtual reality presented by the present tac...
متن کاملA dielectric elastomer actuator-based tactile display for multiple fingertip interaction with virtual soft bodies
This paper presents a novel wearable tactile haptic display for rendering soft body sensations to multiple fingertips with electroactive smart elastomers. The system uses newly developed multi-layered hydrostatically coupled dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), which have been designed to apply a localised tunable force to a user’s fingertip via a soft electrically-deformable interface. The s...
